USOCF Doubles Down on Woonsocket H.S. After School Program: Moves to 2x Per Week!
Posted by: | CommentsThe program we began under a 21st Century Grant from the Woonsocket organization, Connecting Children and Families, is increasing to two afternoons a week.

This past fall, we started the program with three participants. Through the winter, we received a grant from the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen, purchased bicycles from Providence’s Recycle-A-Bike and some indoor trainers. The mild winter has meant that we got several rides in along with learning an understanding of rules of the road and basic bicycle maintenance as taught by League of American Bicyclists Instructor, Richard Durishin..
The program now stands at six members, each of whom signs an agreement to attend all sessions and participate fully. In return, they will get to take their bicycles home this summer. The mother of one of the participants reports that her son is doing better in school, something which she attributes, in part, to the program. That report is consistent with data on programs that challenge students both physically and mentally.
“We are excited about the dedication of the youth involved in the Cycling Club at the Woonsocket High School. With the addition of a second day, we hope to teach students not only about bicycling, but to also teach bike repair and refurbishing. Not only will this build competency, but it will introduce students to a potential career path in a growth segment. As part of the curriculum we plan to introduce the financial aspect of writing a business plan and researching how starting an enterprise like a bike shop could get underway and be maintained,” said Charlotte Boudreau of Woonsocket’s Connecting Children and Families.
The Woonsocket High School After School Bicyclists Club will continue through the end of the school year.

A walk in the woods, climbing a tree or patiently watching a fish rise to a dry fly will not solve everything, but it could go a long way to bring things into a more positive, hopeful perspective. Richard Louv’s “Vitamin N” (the health benefits of time spent in nature) should find its place in the list of Essential Vitamins!

VeloSprints Session 3 Report
Posted by: | Comments

VeloSprints Session 3 was LAST Monday (Feb. 06) at McFadden’s in Providence and it was a wild affair!
The lunch session brought several folks from a nearby advertising agency and some from Brown University. All enjoyed the 1/2 price lunch and the day’s second fastest time (22.49) was set by Geoff Williams – in boots!
The evening session brought several new faces to VeloSprints along with the 2011 Champion, Dillon Benros. Dillon promptly set the fastest time of the evening – and the fastest time in 2012 – 20.94 seconds! A clear warning of his intentions to repeat in 2012.
Session 4 will be on Monday, Feb 20. We will have an early session – 12:00 – 2:00 and a late session from 5:00 until 10:00pm. It is a holiday! Likely there won’t be too much snow. So come and spin for a cause. So far, VeloSprints at McFadden’s has raised $250 this year. Full session results are below…
